On Friday, 6th December I’m undertaking gravestone recording at St. Oswald’s Playground, Durham City. The playground was originally a cemetery, but when the council converted it to a playground they just left the bodies where they were and moved the gravestones to line the cemetery/playground walls.
The aim on the 6th is to transcribe, photograph and map the location of the gravestones, with the results being made available on the web for people to search: Durham County Council have asked me to involve volunteers in this project, hence the email and invite - if you’d like to join in, please let me know.
The aim will be to meet at 9.30ish on the Friday morning for a quick induction and discussion over methodology, followed by a day of recording. I’d suggest we stop at around 3.30pm due to light and also to escape Durham before the afternoon rush.
Please note that the nearest public toilets will be (I think) at Palace Green, which is a 10 minute walk.
Waterproofs, sturdy footwear and a packed lunch are all highly recommended.
Cheers
